What You Need to Know Before You Buy A Vitamin C Serum
Type: There are several different derivatives of vitamin C. These include L-ascorbic acid, sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP), magnesium ascorbyl phosphate(MAP), and calcium ascorbyl phosphate.
The most common form is L-ascorbic acid. Studies indicate that L-ascorbic acid is not always the best form of topical vitamin C due to its instability and limited absorption into the skin cells. In order to compensate for this, the acidity of L-ascorbic must be reduced to a pH of 3.5 in order for it to permeate the skin.
Also, a PubMed article cites that “the addition of ferulic acid aids in both stabilization of the molecule and achieving an acidity of a pH below 3.5”. SAP and MAP have been shown to be more stable forms of vitamin C even at a higher pH.
In summary, look for a vitamin C serum with either a pH of around 3.5 that contains L-ascorbic acid or one that uses the derivatives MAP or SAP.
Concentration: Vitamin C generally needs to be at a concentration of 8% or higher to be beneficial. But because MAPs and SAPs are more absorbent, they can be effective at a lower concentration than ascorbic acid.
This is especially advantageous for those with sensitive skin because lower concentrations equal less irritation. A concentration higher than 20% of most vitamin C derivatives will often cause irritation and is not recommended for daily home use. Depending on your skin type, products with a concentration between 8% and 20% are optimal.
To get the full story, check out our post on which vitamin C concentration is best.
pH: As mentioned earlier, Ascorbic acid must have a pH of 3.5 or less to be stable and effective. For some other forms of vitamin C the pH can be higher. SAP can have up to a pH of 5 and MAP’s pH can be as high as 7.
Storage: Vitamin C can oxidize easily. Oxidized vitamin C serum can wreak havoc on your skin, causing irritation and redness. It’s critical that your serum is kept in an opaque container in a dark, cool place. You might even want to consider storing your serum in a refrigerator. Check out this article on refrigerating your skincare products to extend their life.
Added Helpful Ingredients: Vitamin E and Ferulic Acid have been shown to double the efficacy of vitamin C.
Ethical Standards: Products recommended here are focused on natural or organic ingredients. Most are also cruelty-free, vegan, and free of GMOs, parabens, synthetic fragrance, PEGs, and SLS.
How We Test Our Products: Each of the products we recommend is used and tested by us for at least 5 days (unless they cause adverse reactions). We look for formulas that incorporate organic ingredients that are backed by scientific research and are deemed most effective by this research.
The following brands are formulating products containing organic and responsibly sourced ingredients!

The Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum is a great option if you’re looking for an affordable, yet effective, organic vitamin c serum. I also like that it contains other beneficial ingredients like vitamin E, hyaluronic acid, and ferulic acid.
Mad Hippie uses sodium ascorbyl phosphate, a form of vitamin C that is more stable than others. This vitamin C variant provides a higher efficacy at a lower concentration which makes it less likely to cause skin irritation.
Vitamins C and E are both well-known for their antioxidant properties. Research has shown that sodium ascorbyl phosphate (vitamin C) and vitamin E can actually work together to provide even more protection against sun damage.
Mad Hippie also adds ferulic acid to its formulation. Ferulic acid is particularly effective in boosting the efficacy of vitamins C and E.
To top it off, this serum contains hyaluronic acid to help to plump and hydrate the skin.
This serum blend is perfect for those who are looking for a bright, hydrated complexion. The gel-like texture of this serum absorbs quickly and easily, leaving you with a refreshed and hydrated complexion.
And the best part? One dollar from every sale is donated to global conservation efforts. So not only is this serum good for your skin, but it also helps to protect our planet.
Cocokind Vitamin C Serum with Sea Grape Caviar
Vitamin C Type: Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate
Added Helpful Ingredients: Pure Sodium Hyaluronate powder and Sea Grape Caviar extract
Ethical Standards: Sustainably sourced, cruelty-free, vegan
- Suitable for all skin types
- No added fragrances, colorants, alcohol, preservatives, or artificial ingredients
- Vegan and cruelty-free
- Made in the USA
- Some users report that the serum is sticky
Cocokind’s Vitamin C Serum is a top pick for a number of reasons. First, it is ethically made in the USA.

This serum blends active sodium ascorbyl phosphate (vitamin C), plant-based caviar, and hyaluronic acid to brighten and support your skin. We love that this product is made with ethical and sustainable practices in mind and that it is also affordably priced.
The formula is lightweight and absorbs quickly into the skin and it has a very faint fresh scent. Highly recommend!
Pacifica Glow Baby Super C Serum
Vitamin C Type: L-ascorbic acid
Added Helpful Ingredients: Kakadu Plum and Boswellia Extract
Ethical Standards: Vegan and Cruelty-free. Formulated without parabens, phthalates, SLS or mineral oil. Recyclable glass bottle.
- Absorbs quickly
- Very light citrus scent
- 20% concentration can be irritating for those with sensitive skin
Glow Baby by Pacifica is a brightening and soothing face serum. It has a bit of shimmer in it to give you a natural glow, and it feels very cool to the touch when applied.
There is a very light scent to it, which is nice for those who are sensitive to fragrances.
The main active ingredients are Kakadu Plum and Boswellia Extract. Kakadu Plum is a powerful antioxidant-rich in Vitamin C, which is essential for supporting skin brightness and preventing wrinkles.
Boswellia Extract is an anti-inflammatory agent that is used in conjunction with other ingredients to help address multiple signs of aging, such as fine lines, dark spots, and uneven skin texture.
Overall, this is an excellent choice for those looking for a gentle, lightweight serum that will leave their skin looking bright and radiant.
Derma E Vitamin C Serum
Vitamin C Type: sodium ascorbyl phosphate and C-Ester (ascorbyl palmitate)
Concentration: Company declines to disclose
Added Helpful Ingredients: Hyaluronic Acid, Aloe, Vitamin E
Ethical Standards: 100% vegan, cruelty-free, do not contain parabens, sodium lauryl sulfates, petrolatum, mineral oil, artificial colors, gluten, soy or GMOs.
- More stable form of vitamin C that won’t break down before it’s absorbed into the skin.
- Independent clinical studies show proven results: 100% showed improvement in lines and wrinkles.
- Some claim it flakes under makeup
- Some dislike the scent
I like that Derma E uses a stabilized form of Vitamin C that is less likely to degrade than other types of Vitamin C before being absorbed by the skin. In theory, this will make it more effective than other C serums since Vitamin C is known to lose its potency quickly.
The addition of Hyaluronic Acid in Derma E’s serum attracts and binds moisture to the skin, while Aloe and Vitamin E soothe and nourish. These ingredients work together to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, giving you a youthful complexion.
I love the proven results: In independent 6-week clinical studies, 82% of participants showed an improvement in skin radiance and brightness, and 100% showed a decrease in wrinkles.
Fleur & Bee Nectar of the C
Vitamin C Type: sodium ascorbyl phosphate

- More expensive than some of the other vitamin C serums listed here
All of Fleur & Bee’s products undergo rigorous stability and irritation tests to make sure they’re working exactly as expected. They also use independent third-party labs to verify their results so that we can be assured that their products are safe and effective.
I love Fleur & Bee’s commitment to being as eco-friendly as possible. Their products are made using 100% renewable wind energy and their packaging is made from FSC-certified, 100% recycled post-consumer waste paperboard.

Yuzu, the main ingredient in this vitamin C serum has exceptional antioxidant properties and brightens dull skin. Vanilla extract neutralizes free radicals.

This is a luxury vitamin C serum at a lower price point than many other high-end serums. Worth every penny!

Eva Naturals Vitamin C Serum
Vitamin C Type: Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate
Added Helpful Ingredients: Retinol, Niacinamide, Hyaluronic Acid, Salicylic Acid
Ethical Standards: Free of parabens, sulfates, formaldehyde, DEA, MEA, TEA, and mercury. Cruelty-free.
- Combines several key ingredients for an all-in-one serum
- Treats more many skin concerns at once
- Can be irritating for sensitive skin types
Eva Naturals is the perfect serum for those of us that want to simplify our skincare routine. Instead of applying 4 or 5 different serums, this product makes it easy. Simply apply one serum to target aging, acne, dry skin, and hyperpigmentation.
Not only does this serum help to save time, but it will also save you money. Buying retinol, a hyaluronic acid, and a niacinamide serum in addition to a vitamin C serum will cost upwards of 100$.
This serum is light and absorbs quickly. It does have a slightly pungent scent when first applied because of the Tea Tree Oil but this dissipates quickly. This is a super effective vitamin C serum and a great value!
Ursa Major Brighten Up Vitamin C Serum
Vitamin C Type: Ascorbic Acid Polypeptide
Added Helpful Ingredients: Edelweiss, Rose, Aspen Bark, Aloe, Rose
Ethical Standards: Primarily organic ingredients, free of petrochemicals, SLS, SLES, parabens, synthetic fragrance or color, silicones, or PEGs.
- Light, sheer formula
- Absorbs quickly-no oily or sticky residue
- Fresh natural scent
- Small family-owned company focused on pure natural ingredients
- Higher price point
I love the texture of this serum. It’s smooth and creamy yet extremely lightweight. It’s moisturizing but leaves your skin feeling soft, not greasy.
The predominantly organic ingredients make this serum a standout. Ascorbic acid polypeptide is the primary form of vitamin C in this formulation. Ascorbic acid polypeptide is a stable form of vitamin C that is effective at a much lower concentration. It has been shown to help brighten and improve the appearance of the skin, as well as to improve its tone and firmness.
In addition, this serum contains Edelweiss for its antioxidant properties, Rose Hip for hydration and to treat hyperpigmentation, aspen bark to exfoliate, aloe to soothe, and rose to decrease redness.
MyChelle Dermaceuticals Perfect C PRO Serum
Vitamin C Type: L-Ascorbic Acid
Added Helpful Ingredients: CoQ10, Red Wine Extract, and Plant C-Stem cells
Ethical Standards: Made without GMO, gluten, parabens, petroleum, phthalates, silicones, sulfates, urea, artificial fragrances, and artificial colors. Vegan and cruelty-free.
- Fresh scent
- Rapid results
- High concentration of vitamin C
- Environmental Working Group (EWG) verified
- Higher concentration can cause skin irritation
- Pump can get clogged
MyChelle Perfect C Serum contains CoQ10, Red Wine Extract, and Plant C-Stem cells to boost antioxidant properties and help protect skin from environmental pollution.
If you’re looking for quick and noticeable results, the high concentration of L-ascorbic acid in this serum will be very effective. If you tend to have more skin sensitivity you might want to start with another serum that’s lower in vitamin C to allow your skin to adjust.
The only complaint I have about this product is the pump. It does get clogged as it ages. You can screw the top off to get any remaining product out of the bottle but that also runs the risk of the formula breaking down and losing potency.
This is an amazing skincare company dedicated to formulating natural, environmentally friendly products- I hope that they will at some point upgrade their dispenser.

- Uses SAP -excellent for sensitive skin

- Absorbs instantly
- Very affordable
- Some may prefer a thicker formula
InstaNaturals Vitamin C Serum is a very lightweight, light-scented formula that absorbs immediately, leaving your skin feeling extremely soft and moisturized.
The consistency is slightly thicker than water. My daughter doesn’t like this serum for this reason. She likes a serum with a bit more viscosity. As always, opinions and preferences vary so try it for yourself to find out what’s best for you.
I love that this serum uses SAP as its main form of vitamin C, so that it is gentle yet effective. The hyaluronic and ferulic acid add to the incredibly hydrating properties of this formulation. And for under $20 an ounce, you can’t beat the price!
