“My Green Beauty Favourites” – Sonja’s Elegant Routine

Sundays are for peeking into other people’s bathrooms with our fabulous green goggles of geeky curiosity on!

After looking into the so very different green routines of Berlin-based entrepreneurs Iryna (Toshka Berlin) and Swantje (SAVUE beauty), we’re taking a virtual leap across the Atlantic to see the GREEN BEAUTY FAVOURITES of Sonja Flay, former green beauty blogger and now co-founder of Double Happiness Skincare based in Toronto, Canada.

Sonja has mastered what I personally consider the fine art of sophisticated natural make-up even though she can glam it up alright, and our common ground is our deep, deep love for raw nature (best enjoyed with a few of the eco-friendly benefits of civilisation such as books and beds and good manners) best described with the sweet portemanteu word “glamping”. But without further ado, let’s have a look into her fantastic choice of products that is both luxurious and minimalistic, and thus qualifies as an Elegant Green Routine.

MY GREEN FAVOURITES

As the founder of a natural skincare line I’m deeply entrenched in my green skincare journey, having at first discovered the benefits of nontoxic products offered by so many great brands in this space, and then progressed to being my own alchemist. I’m constantly researching what healing plants, clays and spices the earth has to offer us and as I learn I’m constantly creating new magical blends to help support the skin’s natural function.
My morning routine has simplified over the years and there’s only a few green products that have become my staples.”

“My Double Happiness Refresh Flower Shower Face Mist and Restore Face Oil Potion are absolute gems to me because the face mist is so refreshing, and I’m obsessed with the scent of jasmine and rose, and the face oil provides my skin with a much needed hit of hydration, especially during these long Canadian winters!

After my skin is prepped I dab a bit of rms beauty un’ cover-up in shade ’00’ under my eyes. The perfect shade (finally!) for my snow white complexion, it melts into the skin and never looks chalky.

Then, using a kabuki brush I buff Nu Evolution’s pressed powder in Shade 203 all over my face. I love the way this matte powder looks on my skin (porcelain-like, never dry) and it offers the user serious performance with its buildable coverage. Bonus points given for its sexy packaging and for the fact that it doesn’t contain bismuth oxychloride, (which is natural, but bad for most people’s skin) parabens, artificial dyes, synthetic fragrances, talc, phenoxyethanol, triclosan, BHT, dimethicone or gluten.

Next I swipe on Alima Pure’s Natural Definition mascara, which will be in my beauty bag rotation for life because it defines and extends my lashes with just the right amount of drama for daytime and has never flaked on me.

To complete the look I reach for either Kari Gran’s Radiant Orchard lip whip, for a subtle shade of glossy pink that I will repurchase well into my 80’s because of how much I love it, Nu Evolution’s lipgloss in Berrylicious, for serious pigment and a fun pop of colour, or Bite Beauty’s amuse bouche lipstick in Honeycomb which is the perfect shade of nude for my complexion.

Last but not least I rub some deo creme from Wolkenseifen on under my arms. The lovely Nath of BEAUTYCALYPSE sent me this deodorant all the way from Berlin and it’s one of my treasured green favs. It offers up the perfect amount of scent control, doesn’t stain the armpits of my shirts and the label is just the cutest! I always think of Tinker Bell from Peter Pan and it makes me feel like a kid again.

MY BEAUTYCALYPSE DISCOVERY

“There are countless unique, interesting and eye-opening articles and tips on BEAUTYCALYPSE, but the one thing that has always stuck with me, and made me look at products differently, was her educational piece on the palm oil industry. I will never purchase anything that contains this because of the absolute devastation the harvesting practice of this ingredient has on the natural habitat of orangutans and other animals.”

Word.
Thank you, Sonja, and
happy Sunday, curious cats!
