Double Happiness Skincare: 100% Plant Power | BCBtW #15

The latest addition to the BEAUTYCALYPSE Brand to Watch series comes all the way from Toronto, Canada – say hi to Double Happiness natural, ethical, 100% active ingredients skincare.

DOUBLE HAPPINESS is a brand new Canadian skincare company founded by two ladies born under the sign of Gemini (one of the inspiration sources for the name) who are fired up by the mysterious powers of Nature itself.

BC Brand to Watch:
Double Happiness

You might have spotted one Double Happiness product in this article earlier this month, but even if not, get ready to fall in love now.

One of the founders is a beautiful familiar face – Life in Blush founder and green beauty blogger Sonja Flay. Sonja is passionate about health and skin health in particular; a new herbalist, she’s enthusiastic about learning from Nature and reconnecting with Nature. She launched Double Happiness together with Young Lee – founder of the green skincare brand for men, Uncle Peter’s MAN.With 100% active ingredient-made formulations, ethical raw material sourcing and sustainable glass packaging, Double Happiness isn’t positioning itself on the luxury shelf – the products are not just efficient but on the side of affordable.

Double Happiness
Range Review

The range consists of four heavenly smelling products that you are meant to use very sparingly, for a little of these formulas will go a long way:From left to right:
Refresh: Flower Shower Face Mist, 60 ml (31.10€),
Restart: Face Oil Cleanser, 60 ml (31.10€),
Refine: Face Exfoliator, 60 g (29.02€),
Restore: Face Oil Potion, 30 ml (53,90€).

This is all you need to make your skin happy: cleanse, exfoliate, hydrate and nourish.

⭐️Refresh: Flower Shower Face Mist is my personal favourite – the delicious blend of rose and jasmine flower waters with delicate invigorating oils of neroli and sandalwood. The versatile face mist is ideal to layer when applying make-up or to refresh your face in-between. It’s also great for those who swear by the K-beauty “7 skin” hydration method – basically, layering toner 7 times (I’ve always layered my toner/ flower water 2-3 times not knowing I was onto something, hehe).

Ingredients: ROSA DAMASCENA (ROSE OTTO) FLOWER WATER, JASMINUM OFFICINALE (JASMINE) FLOWER OIL†, ROSA DAMASCENA (ROSE OTTO) FLOWER OIL*, CITRUS AURANTIUM AMARA (NEROLI FLOWER) OIL, SANTALUM SPICATUM (SANDALWOOD) WOOD OIL‡
*ORGANIC †SOCIAL ENTERPRISE ‡SUSTAINABLY HARVESTED.

⭐️With Restart: Face Oil Cleanser even mascara will melt away without any residue. Pumpkin and rice bran oils are the delicious nourishing base here that makes the cleanser a wonderful product for facial massage.

Ingredients: CUCURBITA PEPO (PUMPKIN) SEED OIL**, ORYZA SATIVA (RICE BRAN) OIL, OENOTHERA BIENNIS (EVENING PRIMROSE) OIL**, COCOS NUCIFERA (FRACTIONATED COCONUT) OIL, JASMINUM OFFICINALE (JASMINE) FLOWER OIL†, ROSA DAMASCENA (ROSE OTTO) FLOWER OIL*, CITRUS AURANTIUM AMARA (NEROLI FLOWER) OIL, SANTALUM SPICATUM (SANDALWOOD) WOOD OIL‡
*ORGANIC **CERTIFIED ORGANIC †SOCIAL ENTERPRISE ‡SUSTAINABLY HARVESTED

⭐️Impurities don’t stand a chance with Refine: Face Exfoliator – based on white clay, oat flour and brown rice flour and infused with the healing, cooling properties of flax, kelp, calendula, lavender and grapefruit.

Ingredients: WHITE KAOLIN CLAY, OAT FLOUR, BROWN RICE FLOUR, OLEA EUROPAEA (OLIVE) OIL^, FLAX MEAL POWDER, KELP POWDER, ROSE PETALS*, CALENDULA FLOWERS*, LAVENDER FLOWERS*, ROSA DAMASCENA (ROSE OTTO) FLOWER OIL*, LAVANDULA ANGUSTIFOLIA (LAVENDER) OIL*, CITRUS PARADISI (GRAPEFRUIT) OIL*
*ORGANIC ^CERTIFIED ORGANIC

⭐️Finally, the precious amber drops of Restore: Face Oil Potion make for a wonderful make-up base and a light hydrating treatment. Just two drops are enough for face and neck!

Ingredients: PUNICA GRANATUM (POMEGRANATE) SEED OIL, SIMMONDSIA CHINENSIS (JOJOBA) OIL*, BRASSICA OLERACEA ITALICA (BROCCOLI) SEED OIL, ROSA RUBIGINOSA (ROSEHIP SEED) OIL**, HIPPOPHAE RHAMNOIDES (SEABUCKTHORN) OIL, JASMINUM OFFICINALE (JASMINE) FLOWER OIL†, SANTALUM SPICATUM (SANDALWOOD) WOOD OIL‡, ROSA DAMASCENA (ROSE OTTO) FLOWER OIL*, CANANGA ODORATA (YLANG YLANG) FLOWER OIL, MICHELIA CHAMPACA (MAGNOLIA LEAF) OIL, SCHIZANDRA SPENANTHERA (SCHIZANDRA BERRY) OIL*, CITRUS AURANTIUM AMARA (NEROLI FLOWER) OIL

Q&As with Double Happiness Founders

Q: Sonja, I remember you sharing with me that you wanted to create uncompromised organic skincare that wouldn’t cost an arm and a leg, and I think it’s safe to say “mission accomplished”. However, Double Happiness isn’t entry level in terms of a conventional routine – no creams, no foams, etc., instead: a powder exfoliator, different oil blends, and the face mist infused with precious oils. So, who’s the girl or woman Double Happiness is made for? Where does she stand in life and in her green journey? What does she expect from skincare?

Sonja:
I always love hearing people’s perspective on the brand because to me this is very much “entry level” due to its simplistic line-up, but that being said I didn’t create Double Happiness with the intention of making it “routine” or for the beginner or the more advanced. Instead I wanted a less-is-more line whose purpose was easy to understand because the Double Happiness woman is busy and she’s juggling work, family and a social life so she wants her skincare to be uncomplicated and expects it to be effective.

In terms of where she stands in her green journey… Double Happiness appeals to women who are just beginning, and therefore appreciates the simplicity of the line, and those who are well on their way or fully entrenched in the lifestyle. Young and I spent the last three years perfecting Double Happiness’ products, making them with organic, wild-crafted, sustainable and social enterprise* ingredients that were specifically chosen for their ability to harmonize with each other and with the skin’s microbiome. We wanted women who use our products to feel and see their skin thriving and not just merely surviving the day-to-day.  Double Happiness products are nature’s medicine for the skin.

*Social Enterprise refers to a classification of essential oils that were harvested by workers who were paid a fair wage and who were treated in a fair manner

Q: What is your personal favourite from the range? And what is some particular ingredient you absolutely love in the range? – Tough questions here, I know… 😉

Sonja:
Tough indeed! I love all of my skin care babies, but if I had to choose one then our Restore Face Oil Potion has a special place in my heart because of how long it took us to perfect it and the use of some pretty unique, and uncommon, ingredients. I’m absolutely in love with the power of Schizandra Berry and Magnolia Leaf essential oils.

Schizandra Berry oil has been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine to boost the body’s chi and raise the body’s stress threshold. Our Schizandra Berry essential oil is distilled from the berries of the Indonesian Schizandra shrub and is a true elixir for sensitive and inflamed skin. Legend has it that after 100 days of using Schizandra the skin is completely rejuvenated!

Our Magnolia Leaf essential oil contains the healing properties of a species of trees that first came into existence some 95 million years ago* and is particularly beneficial for strengthening weakened skin. In addition its scent can calm frazzled nerves and is a glorious confidence booster, instilling a heightened sense of self-love, helping those who use it to see and experience their own inner and outer beauty.

Q: Hack time: to me, the DH range is quite multi-use. Do you have any particular tips for the products?

Young: Yes! Because our products are mostly oil based, there are lots of ways to nurture both skin (face and body) and hair with oils. Although we highly recommend you save our products for your skin treatments, you can also use it on dry hair, flyaways and on severe dry spots on the body such as your elbows and knuckles when cold weather strikes. Our Restart Face Oil Cleanser is also great as a massage oil for both the face and body. I personally use the Restore Face Oil Potion on dry spots on my body at night before I go to sleep.

Another favourite tip I can share is the using a warm washcloth to wipe off the cleanser oil. Some people don’t prefer this and use a dry cloth, but we find using a warm cloth is not only therapeutic for the senses, but really refreshing on the skin. Just be sure to dampen the washcloth in filtered water! Tap water, and all of the chemicals found in it, is very hard on the microbiome of the skin.

Q: Same plants/seeds from different soils may have different benefits – how do you source what’s best for your formulas?

Sonja:
You’re absolutely right that the soil moisture and growing conditions impact the plant’s effectiveness which is why we carefully chose suppliers who put a priority on cultivating oils that have been organically produced and steam-distilled for purity.[Image: Young and Sonja]

Q: Do you plan pursuing certifications/ eco labels or do you prefer to invest money and research into certified organic/ quality ingredients? In the long run?

Young: Our ingredients and source quality of the ingredients are our top priority. Any eco-label that comes from our supply chain naturally is married to our sourced ingredients. Because quality and pureness of ingredients with sustainability in mind is important, every ingredient is researched responsibility – where it comes from, how it affects the community where it’s derived and understanding the quality control before they enter our batches.

Q: What do you love the most about being a skincare entrepreneur?

Young: Being an entrepreneur alone is already a rewarding experience with all the hard work and dedication it comes with. And being an entrepreneur in skincare – something that we’re both so passionate about and care about deeply, is just empowering! Putting our energy into something where we want to make a positive impact is a humbling opportunity that we never want to take for granted.

The best compliment we can receive is when a customer tells us how our products have improved their skin. Skin is very personal and we’re so happy we can make people feel confident and good about their personal appearance. And knowing that you’re providing this wonderful service with uncompromising quality is even a better feeling.

Another great thing we love is the community that comes with doing this.

Being part of a ‘green’ skincare community makes you feel validated all over again and remind you why we started this in the first place. You’re doing something good and it feels great.

Thank you, Sonja and Young!

  1. As soon as they are available in Europe I might get the face mist. Since I am using one daily in combination with my skin care and make-up my skin is doing so much better. At the moment I have one from Santaverde. Even though I typically do not like the smell of rose in skin care and make-up I really enjoy this one. The Double Happiness mist sounds great as well thanks to the sandalwood and neroli.

  2. My image of Sonja is with flaming red hair so took a second to recognise her! Fab Q&A. Delightful sounding range especially the Flower Shower and that Restore potion. Fingers crossed they get an European stockist.

    • Yes, she changed the hair colour 🙂 I am particularly fond of the Flower Shower and the make-up removing oil blend, it’s absolutely delightful!

  3. I can imagine that these oils smell heavenly. Let’s hope a European shop will store this too, shipping is so expensive 😳

  4. Love, love this content and hearing about new organic skincare businesses. Best of luck to these ladies, very clever. Makes me more determined to succeed in my venture. Now a blog on how to clone oneself would be welcome 😉

    • Haha, excellent. As they say, the biggest secrets are out for all to see but they protect themselves. My point – success is only about focus and showing up. The challenge is to ACTUALLY focus. And focus is a habit we can enforce. I should write about this, then, ha! 🙂
